As architects, we constantly learn from our counterparts in other places. Innovations regarding materials and assemblies that originate in other settings can often be adapted to our home setting, because the laws of physics and many other factors are the same.
During a recent 6-month Fulbright travel grant to Finland, the presenter studied the regional wisdom of Finland regarding contemporary design and construction, and regarding durable, life-cycle building strategies. He also taught at Aalto University in Helsinki, in which graduate students analyzed several recent Finnish buildings as well as others in Spain, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
This presentation summarizes lessons from these teaching and research activities that originate as technical analyses of specific buildings, but which yield core knowledge that is valuable to design professionals in other settings, including North Carolina. This presentation is very pragmatic, with a focus on the seam between construction technologies and design. A designer's repertoire will be broadened by learning about recent technical solutions and seeing its vivid embodiment in excellent built projects.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn how to use existing construction materials in new ways
- See and understand how new architectural materials and processes can be applied
- Review lessons from recent buildings that match materials with particular climatic or geographic settings
- Become familiar with a method to analyze a material or building assembly
