Case Study and Site Tour

Sparq Center in Bailey Power Plant

Join the BEC-RT and BEC-Charlotte on October 24th for this two-part event featuring a case study presentation (1 ceu) and tour (1 Ceu) at the Bailey power plant in winston salem. what was once a coal-fired plant, is now a restored, re-source saving icon of sustainability.

This program will examine the complexities of adaptive reuse projects with regards to building enclosures, where historic constructions must integrate with new building systems and accomodate today's occupancies and increasing enclosure performance requirements. Using multiple case study examples, the presenters will examine technical considerations common to adaptive reuse projects, such as performance of mass masonry walls, remediation of existing distress, and material choices. Construction professionals will also provide lessons learned in historic reuse projects, with a focus on constructability and adapting to field conditions. We will conclude with an in-depth review of the Bailey Power Plant project, which transformed R.J. Reynolds' former coal-fired power plant at the heart of the new Innovation Quarter, including a tour of accessible sections of the building and exterior. The $40 million renovation retained 97% of the historic plant building, which now houses offices, incubator space, restaurants, and more.
